Germania Radio Program Marks Jubilee Friday
The Silver Jubilee festival of the Germania Broadcast of Chicago, one of the city's oldest foreign language programs, will be held in Orchestra Hall Friday. The program is heard on WGES at 8:30 p.m. weekdays and at 10:30am Sundays. Hermann Leopoldi, Viennese composer and entertainer, and Franziska Gaal, film and stage actress, will be featured on the program.
Top radio and operetta stars who have appeared on the Germania Broadcast during the past 25 years also will be heard. Germania Broadcast which was founded in Chicago was the first Germania radio program in the United Stated sent by short wave from America to Europe. The program is noted for helping Chicagoans find work during the depression years through its "Who Will Help?" series, for promoting German art and culture, and for its special conducted tours to Europe for its audience.
Ilka Diehl, comedienne popular with straw hat theater fans of the last three or four summers, will be seen in an old role at the 25th anniversary of the Germania Broadcast, Oct. 3 in Orchestra Hall. She'll be one of a group of old time German entertainers who will return for the event.
